| Masterful showing There was no shortage of storylines during the second and final day of competition at the second annual Paul Smithson Memorial Bonspiel. The Simcoe Curling Club hosted the event's final draws yesterday afternoon, where a provincial champion team and thrown-together group would meet for the 'A' Final. On one side, original skip Ward Gee was unable to attend after the first round, so Patti Pepper took the reigns, and along with third Al Brubacker, second Bob Defreyne and lead Rheal Dorie, and went on a run all the way to the championship, where they would face the defending Ontario Masters champions. Led by skip Bob Edmondson, the rink from Oakville had navigated it's way though the bracket, and eventually wound up playing for the title. The game was neck and neck after three ends. In the fourth, Edmondson stole four points, leading to a 6-2 victory in seven ends. Both teams entered the lounge area to a round of cheers and admiration from fellow players and onlookers. "It was tense," explained Pepper. "I came in for the second game thinking that was the only game I'd be playing. Bob Edmondson, he's a Masters champion, so it was just an honour to be out there playing with him. The fact that we were out there for that long a time made me feel good." "There's good quality teams here, and we're glad we came because the ice was perfect – a good icemaker -- and it's a real good club, so it fits nicely for us." The Edmondson rink went into the final day as the favourite, but he said the road to the championship wasn't an easy one. The 16-team bonspiel generated money as well as excitement. When play was complete, chairman Bill Van Rooyen presented a cheque to the Alzheimer's Society of Haldimand Norfolk for $1,000 in honor of Smithson -- a championship curler from Simcoe who died in 2007. A friend of both Smithson and his wife Ruth Anne, Pepper could think of no better way to salute one of the best the club has seen. "It makes me shiver," she said. "It's exciting that we can honour Paul in that way." |

Team Oakville won the 2008 Ontario Masters Championship with a record of 7 wins and one loss in a 9 team round robin format, defeating 2 time Canadian Senior and World Champion Bob Turcotte along the way.
Upward of 120 Mens teams started the Masters playdowns leading to the Ontario Masters Curling Championship.
In the deciding final game of the Round Robin, Edmondson stole the final end to tie the game, and then went on to capture the Provincial title by taking one more point in an Extra End and to avoid a playoff with Team Larsen (representing Guelph CC). Larsen is a former provincial Seniors Champion ( 2002). For the final draw , there was a chance of a 4 way playoff . As Edmondson won the last game , the Turcotte, Larsen, and Stoddart teams were eliminated from playoff contention . Stoddart and Turcotte were also defeated in the final game.
Team Edmondson of Oakville has won the Masters Curling Championship of Ontario 4 of the last 5 years and are the Defending Canadian Masters Curling Champions.
The Canadian Masters Curling Championships take place in Nanaimo B.C. March 31 - April 7 2008.

Bob Edmondson and his Oakville Curling Club rink are Canadian Masters Champions!
Skip Edmondson, with vice David Stewart, second Brian Longley, and lead Graham MacEachern, representing Ontario, defeated Alberta's Keith Kaufman in the final of the Canadian Open Masters Curling Championship Saturday at Hamilton's Glendale Golf and Country Club.
Edmondson scored two in the eighth and final end, to take the game 5-4.
Both teams finished round-robin play with 7-2 records but Alberta got the bye into the final because of it's win over Ontario earlier in the week.
The Edmondson quartet handily defeated Nova Scotia's Peter MacPhee 11-4 in the semifinal, stealing a game-ending five in the seventh end. Team Edmondson ended up with a record of 9 wins and two loss record to capture the Canadian Open Masters Championship.
Alberta's Linda Wagner with vice Sandra Turner, second Marilyn Toews, and lead Betty Clarke were crowned champions after defeating Manitoba 9-6. End
